Harry W. Lawton was born in Long Beach, CA on December 11, 1927. He was a writer, journalist, editor, historian, and a lecturer at the University of California, Riverside. He is best known for his book, Willie Boy: A Desert Manhunt and for contributing to the preservation of California history. William Mike was a leader of the Twenty-Nine Palms Band, a Chemehuevi people in the desert region of Southern California. He came into this role in 1903 after the death of his brother Jim Mike. During this time, the Twenty-Nine Palms Band lived at the Oasis of Mara, in what is now Joshua Tree National Park. Willie Boy (Chemehuevi) lived during the late 19th and early 20th century. He became well-known through sensational media portrayals of the "last Western manhunt."
